How to Adopt

Thank you for your interest in adopting a GAHS animal! Every year, we place thousands of cats, dogs and small animals in loving homes. We strive to find the best matches for the pets and their new families. To help us do that, we ask that all potential adopters fill out the Pet Adoption Survey found below. It can also be filled out in-person when you visit the shelter.
Please note that adoptions happen on a “first come, first served” basis. Submitting an adoption survey does not guarantee an adoption, or place a hold on any animal. Submitting the survey in advance simply saves time while here meeting the animals.
An in-person or phone adoption counseling process will occur with each adoption visit and we schedule pet visits as people enter our facility. Please keep in mind that we often have lines for puppies or kittens, with visitors waiting at the door before we open. We reserve the right to cut off new adoption visits if we have limited staffing or enough visits in line to take up the rest of the day.
In most cases, the GAHS does “same day adoptions.” Animals 6 months or older may be put ‘On Hold’ only when a family has completed the Pet Adoption Survey, visited the pet, completed the counsel and has been approved to adopt that pet. The hold will be for 24 hours, intended for someone that needs more time to work out details before welcoming their new pet. There is a $30 hold fee.
Please note that a photo ID is required to process an adoption, and adopters must be at least 18 years of age.
GAHS is committed to reducing pet overpopulation. All of the dogs, cats and rabbits are spayed or neutered before they are placed in a new home. This includes puppies and kittens over 8 weeks of age. Information about medical care and treatment given to the animal while in our care will be provided to adopters.
Adoption Fees
While we strive to keep adoption fees low, we also provide many services for the pets while in our care. GAHS animals are sterilized, treated for any identified medical conditions, provided with flea and tick prevention, are up-to-date on vaccines, have been microchipped and are provided with a complimentary veterinary visit upon adoption, as well as one month of pet insurance.
