Cozy Up to a New Business Model: Fostering Cats with GAHS

Running a business can be demanding, but Courtney, owner of Quiet City Books in Lewiston, has found a unique way to add warmth, charm, and even increased foot traffic to her bookstore: fostering cats from the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society (GAHS).

“I decided to start fostering because I want all the cats but I can’t have all the cats,” Courtney admits with a laugh. This relatable sentiment is what sparked her journey into fostering, offering a solution for those who love animals but may not be able to commit to permanent ownership.

The benefits have extended beyond just satisfying Courtney’s love for felines. “I’ve seen an increase in patrons because people want to meet the bookstore cats,” she reveals. “They often stay to shop and tell their friends!” The presence of a furry friend creates a welcoming and cozy atmosphere, drawing in customers and encouraging them to linger. “Having a cat also lends to the cozy atmosphere here,” Courtney explains.

Beyond the business boost, fostering provides a loving environment for cats awaiting their forever homes. Courtney currently hosts LT, a talkative and affectionate feline. “Everyone should know that LT wants love! She loves ear scratches and affection,” Courtney shares. LT’s vocal nature adds a touch of personality to the bookstore, often leading to playful interactions with customers. “She is also very talkative. If you lose sight of her, you can Marco-Polo meow your way to her location.”

Courtney’s experience is a testament to the positive impact of fostering. “I have hosted 8 cats,” she proudly states, highlighting her commitment to helping animals in need. Her story serves as an inspiration for other businesses considering opening their doors to foster cats. Imagine the possibilities: a bookstore cat curled up on a stack of books, a friendly face greeting customers at a local boutique, or a playful kitten brightening the day at a small office.

Fostering cats can be a rewarding experience for businesses of all kinds. It’s a chance to give back to the community, create a unique and inviting atmosphere, and help animals find their forever homes.
