Community Service

GAHS welcomes volunteers looking to fulfill community service requirements that are part of a work, school, or church commitment or that are court-mandated. In all cases, it is very important that you contact us well ahead of your deadline (ideally two months in advance) or we may not be able to accommodate you or your group.

Please note that the volunteer orientation and training program can take several hours before you will be eligible to begin actual volunteer shifts.  If your initial interest in volunteering starts with a service requirement but you hope to continue beyond those hours, we may be a good fit for you.

We cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate requests for community service hours as our needs change regularly however, we’d love to talk with you to see what we can work out!  Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@gahumane.org to discuss any community service volunteering.

Court-Mandated Community Service

When available, GAHS offers service hours to court-mandated volunteers. As with regular community service, it is  important that you contact us well in advance of your deadline. Contacting us at least two months in advance will increase your chances of fulfilling your hours with us.  Keep in mind, however, that we cannot guarantee hours.

All court-mandated community service volunteers must email the Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@gahumane.org and provide:

  • Court documentation of offense
  • Number of hours to be completed
  • Deadline for completion
  • Supervisor/Probation Officer/Court contact information

The crime must have been completed while applicant was over the age of 18, and the reason for required hours must NOT pertain to any of the following:

  • Theft
  • Drugs
  • Violence of any kind
  • Animal Abuse
  • Sexual Offense

We will only place court-mandated community service volunteers in one of the following areas: grounds keeping (weeding, raking, etc.), indoor maintenance (cleaning glass, mopping, sweeping, dusting, etc.), and other special projects when available. Court-mandated community service volunteers will not be placed in positions working with the animals or visitors.

Greater Androscoggin Humane Society does not guarantee hours for court-mandated community service volunteers. We reserve the right to terminate any court-mandated volunteer at any time.
