Special Pets for Seniors

GAHS firmly believes that people and pets go together, and that people of all types and stripes deserve a loving relationship with a companion animal.  In order to help facilitate that, we offer a Special Pets for Seniors program, where certain cats and dogs 8 years and up are available at a half-off adoption fee for adopters over the age of 65.  In order to qualify for this program, the pets must not have been transferred from out-of-state and must have already been spayed or neutered prior to coming into our shelter.

Pet ownership offers many benefits for our senior residents including; easing pain and anxiety, creating a daily routine, boosting the activity level and expanding social ties.   It is also important to note that pets can be physically demanding, and do come with associated costs, so GAHS will attempt to make the most appropriate match for both the adopter and the animal.

Did you know that GAHS visits many nursing and care/rehabilitation homes on a monthly basis? We love to visit residents of these facilities with a cute puppy, snuggly kitten or even an outgoing bunny rabbit.  The animals enjoy the cuddles almost as much as the residents enjoy meeting these wonderful creatures.  Want to get your facility added to the “Snuggle Time” roster?  Contact Volunteer@gahumane.org for details.
